It's been one week since we got home from our four day 'end of summer' vacation getaway to Ruby & Rick's (R & R) Bed and Breakfast in Osoyoos, BC, Canada's only genuine desert! My husband Rick and I had never done a B & B before but co-author Julie and her hubby Graham love this one and highly recommended it. It was absolutely gorgeous - we had a beautiful bedroom that looked out onto the Lake; our patio doors opened onto a lovely space just a few steps away from our own beach front area; the homemade breakfasts lovingly prepared by Ruby were spectacular and delivered right to our dining room table; BUT apparently breakfasts are supposed to be eaten at 8:30am??? So that's what sunrise on a lake looks like? Who knew?
The lake is supposed to be the warmest in Canada but I stuck my toes in Friday when we arrived and figured somebody was exagerrating - it felt friggin' freezin' to me! Apparently, we'd just missed the intense desert heat by a few days and the lake was already cooling down... go figure! Aside from the fabulous breakfasts the hi-light of the weekend for me was my jet-ski experience. It was on my bucket list and I was very disappointed that the wind came up on Saturday and no boats were on the lake at all. We went to check out the parasailing but it was too windy for them too - so we spent a quiet day cuddling and contemplating what to do on Sunday IF the weather smartened up. Lucky for me, it did!
Sunday was cool and cloudy but the lake was relatively calm so we knew it was now or never. The boat rental was just down the street from our B & B and, as luck would have it, they had a three seater Yamaha jet ski ready to go. The owners suggested it would be safer for me to drive (God Bless 'Em!) as I could hang onto the handles and be more stable... lol... BIG mistake - they had no idea they were putting the vehicle into the hands of an adrenaline junkie! Bless my husband for KNOWING that fact and STILL having the courage to get on behind me anyway! It took about 60 seconds for me to get the feel of the machine and tell my husband to 'hang on tight'... I haven't laughed that hard in a long, long, while! My poor husband almost had a heart attack at one point - as I was flying over the rising waves he shouted into my ear, "You're doing a great job of reading the waves!" and I shouted back with a big grin on my face that he couldn't see, "What are you talking about? I've got my eyes closed!" Poor Rick - if I hadn't been going flat out and he hadn't been wearing a pair of $400 prescription sunglasses, I'm sure he would have jumped off then and there! If you haven't been on a jet ski I highly recommend it! It's completely exhilarating for any other adrenaline junkies out there like me - but you may want to consider leaving your partners to wave at you from the beach if they don't have quite the same sense of adventure that you do! However, I'm very glad to have made another wonderful memory with my husband Rick who always humours me in my quest for the next big rush as I work towards the day when I'm smiling contentedly in my porch rocker ... when I'm 80 something!
